The 27 yo athlete is known to have been voted sexiest player of the French championship by the readers of gay magazine Têtu and also for posing topless on the cover of the same magazine in 2012. But the link that the “French Beckham” has created with gay people do not seem to be limited to that. Indeed the soccer player now appears alongside his Arsenal teammates in a video intended to fight homophobia. In this ad, we see some international players say they can not change some of their physical aspects such as their size or their hair. Theo Walcott for instance says he can not change the fact that he looks like Lewis Hamilton.
Thus Giroud, shirtless and with a naughty look says on camera: “I can not change the fact that I am gorgeous.” (Thanks god!) But at the end of the video we hear a voiceover reminding is that despite the immutability of certain things, “together we can change the game” and oust homophobia out of sport.The campaign entitled #rainbowlaces, invites Internet users to use rainbow laces on their sneakers to show their support and fight against discrimination among athletes.
